What are you going to do with your life?

Man, Work, Think, Laptop, Professional, Young, Person

Recently I’ve had several conversations with people about their futures and what they are going to do with their lives. There’s this pressure put on everyone to know who they are, what they’re supposed to do, and start taking steps to accomplish it.

In high school you’re supposed to know what college to go to, in college you have to know what major or field to study in, once you’re out of school you’re supposed to have a career path, a plan, your future all planned out. I’m just one of the many who’s struggled with what I’m supposed to do with my life. And honestly I don’t have a specific plan, or in Christian terms, a calling.

But as I talked about this with other friends who are struggling with the same thing, I started to wonder if I really need to know. Then I came across this quote from the Valley of Vision.

“As I pursue my heavenly journey by thy grace
let me be known as a man with no aim
but that of a burning desire for thee,
and the good and salvation
of my fellow men.”

What if my goal or “aim” isn’t a certain career, or a job I love, or getting married and having kids? What if my only goal is to desire God, to know Him better, and to do good to my fellow humans and point them to who can save them? That can be achieved in any circumstance, at any age, in any place, with anyone who’s around me.

I still may have a job I pursue, or one day have a family, but the thing that defines my life, my relationship with God, won’t change. And what I do for God, because I love Him, will have the most significance.

So if you’re struggling with what you’re supposed to do too, take a step back and spend some time with God. He has the best, most fulfilling and awesome plan for your life, and He’ll help you take the next step in that plan for His glory and your good. He may not tell you what exactly He has planned (I still don’t know what He has planned for me) but He will be with you every step of the way. And ultimately, that’s a lot more comforting than knowing what’s coming.

Poem for Roses

This winter our rosebush outside has had some beautiful roses bloom and stay on the bush for weeks. Seeing them reminded me of this poem I had written in college from a rosebud’s perspective.
I hope you enjoy it.

Rosebud

Rosebud

You’d think I’d be proud.

Everyone knows the rose:

I’m always wanted for weddings,

apologies, Valentines, even the tango.

But you don’t know me at all.

I’m sick of that kind of attention:

I don’t want to be clipped,

pruned, removed,

sitting in a glass vase,

dying slowly.

That’s my worst nightmare,

locked inside, or worse yet,

hung upside down till I’m  a dry

crisp corpse, then put on display

yet again.

You know the real reason for my thorns?

They’ve grown to keep you away.

Why can’t you let me grow

and die in peace with my friends?

Simply satisfied

in smelling our sweet

scents mixing in the spring air.

Please find a different symbol

for love,

one that doesn’t require my death.

Texas Poetry

The other day I was looking through old pictures with my sister. It was fun to reminisce and see all these moments from my life captured on film. So I decided to post a poem that I wrote several years ago. I hope you enjoy it.

Life’s Gait

I used to take riding lessons
in the dust of a parched Texas summer.
The steady beat and swift breeze
kept me circling the worn path.

Click of the tongue,
nudge to the stomach,
tug on the reigns,
up and down with the motion.

Sometimes we canter quickly,
sometimes we walk slow,
but always we must move.
We cannot stop the flow

round the earth,
round the sun,
the motion of time,
since life first begun.

We like to think
we have control,
that our choices determine
where we will go.

Then in the air, all
power stripped away

hit the hard ground
wondering what went wrong

Did I lose control
or ever even have it?

Legs shake as I rose, to face
my choice.

Do I sit out on life?

Or jump back in?

It will keep moving,
whatever my decision.

I could fall again,
and break more than my pride.
But is security worth the price,
of losing out on life?

I climbed back on,
determined to keep in mind
that despite my lack of control,
life is still a fun ride.

Forever

Sorry I haven’t been posting recently. It’s been a busy week at my home with large remodeling projects and a crazy work schedule. However, over the weekend, I had some downtime to relax and decided to try out a new TV show that started this fall.

It’s called Forever and follows the adventures of a Dr. Henry Morgan who has the strange condition of not staying dead. he has lived for at least 200 years and every time he dies, he finds himself alive again somewhere in water. The show follows a Sherlock Holmes style crime solving plot line, with the doctor’s having a long history that provides a vast knowledge that few can match, and an eye for catching details. It reminds me of Elementary, another of my favorite shows which will be returning again this fall.

But the one thing I really like about this new show is it’s take on life, and the meaning it has. Since the doctor keeps on living, certain things that are normal for the rest of us, have worn off on him. He needs to be reminded of beauty, the importance of relationships, even if they do end, and that things can change and history doesn’t necessarily have to repeat itself. In any case, I’ve found the show to be quite entertaining and I’m interested to see how the season progresses.

Here’s a link to a preview of the show if you’re interested:

A Poem for Spring

DSC04192

Spring is in the air,
Life anew appears.

What once was
dead, brittle, brown,
Now is alive and green.

Birds gather to feed and bathe,
The wildflowers bloom.
Bees buzz and wander over
a vibrant sea of color.

I breathe it in and feel a peace,

Something in me knows,
Like spring that comes each year,

Death will not be my end,
Life will continue.
